Sinfonia!

The word “sinfonia” comes from the Italian Baroque era and refers to a short piece of music introducing the many themes found in an opera. We are using it like a prelude or an overture to the experience of a life of music making! Sinfonia! is an opportunity for students to experience the social aspects of music: Enjoying making quality music together!

Sinfonia! is offered to any family who is enrolled in Lake Michigan Home School Connection, Inc. If you are not currently enrolled and would like an application, please click here.

Sinfonia! classes are sequential in nature and not necessarily based on age or grade level. Students may advance through the program at their own pace and upon the director’s approval. Accountability, expectation and discipline are three qualities that define our program.

Ideally, each student will use Sinfonia! to supplement their ongoing private lessons. If the student is not taking private lessons, participating in Sectionals is highly recommended. Students sometimes become frustrated and lose interest for lack of individualized attention and the use of private lessons or sectionals may help to alleviate this. Success of a student’s experience in Sinfonia! is of utmost importance and will require consistent involvement and encouragement by parents.

Parents are invited to participate in Sinfonia! classes as beginners or experienced musicians at no charge. It is important that parents value at-home practicing of Sinfonia! music. Activities that will greatly add to the success of the student’s experience include attending live music events in the community, listening to music recommended by the director, performing special music at church and having mini-concerts at home for the enjoyment of family and friends.

Students in seventh grade and above may have the opportunity to participate in Michigan School Band & Orchestra Association’s solo and ensemble festivals as well as state band and orchestra auditions.

Participation in Sinfonia! is advantageous for many reasons including music’s role in fine tuning the inner ear (which has shown to facilitate learning in all areas), adding diversity to the home school curriculum, being a wonderful social experience, and building confidence and self esteem. It is also advantageous on college applications.
